Choanal (health)


Pertaining to the choana, the passageway from the back of one side of the nose to the throat. The choana is shaped like an inverted funnel which opens into the upper throat. The choanae must be open to permit breathing through the nose. Choanal atresia is blockage of the choanal passageway while choanal stenosis is narrowing of that passageway. The word choanal is pronounced co-anal but it has nothing to do with the anus.





Little Mermaid, The (oh)



a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen in which a mermaid (=a woman with a fish's tail who lives in the sea) changes her fish's tail for legs, even though this is very painful, because she loves a human prince. But the prince marries a human princess instead, and the little mermaid dies.There is a statue of the Little Mermaid at the entrance to the harbour in Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark.
