First degree burn (health)


A superficial burn with similar characteristics to a typical sun burn. The skin is red in color and sensation is intact. In fact, it is usually somewhat painful.

The fifth letter of the modern English alphabet and of the ancient Roman one, repr. the Semitic 0/font> (= h), but adopted by the Greeks (and from them by the Romans) as a vowel. Used to denote serial order; applied e.g. to the fifth group or section, sheet of a book, etc.
Music. (Cap. E.) The third note of the diatonic scale of C major. Also, the scale of a composition with E as its keynote.
Logic. (Cap. E.) A proposition which is universal and negative.
The fifth hypothetical person or example.
Math. (Italic e.) The irrational number 2.71828..., equal to the limit of (1+1n)n as n tends to infinity; the sum 1+1 / 1!+1 / 2!+1 / 3!+..., where ! denotes a factorial.
(Usu. cap. E.) Designating the fifth highest class (of academic marks, etc.).
E-layer, a stratum of the ionosphere between the lowest (D-) and highest (F-) layers, able to reflect long Radio waves. Also called Heaviside layer, Kennelly layer, Kennelly-Heaviside layer.
