Cauchy (iou) and plane of incidence (medicine)

Cauchy (iou)

Cauchy noun. L19.
[A.-L. Cauchy (1789-1857), French mathematician.]
Math.
Used attrib. and in possess. to designate concepts introduced by Cauchy or arising out of his work. L19.
Cauchy integral (formula), Cauchy's integral (formula) a formula expressing the value of a function at a point in terms of an integral round a closed curve enclosing the point. Cauchy sequence any sequence of numbers an which satisifes the condition that, for any positive number ŠĆ, a value of n can be chosen so that any two members of the sequence after an differ by a quantity less than ŠĆ. Cauchy's theorem spec. the theorem that the integral of an analytic function of a complex variable round a closed curve which encloses no singularities is zero.
Cauchy-Riemann equation [RIEMANN], each of two partial differential equations which must be satisfied if a function of two variables is to be separable into a real part and an imaginary part. E20.
Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, = SCHWARZ inequality. M20.

plane of incidence (medicine)

plane of incidence

The plane perpendicular to a lens surface that contains the incident light ray.
