[French from Spanish miquelete, migue-, from Catalan Miquel, Spanish Miguel Michael.]
Hist. Orig., a member of a body of Catalonian bandits active in the Pyrenees in the 17th cent.; a Spanish guerrilla soldier during the Peninsular war. Later also, a soldier of any of various local regiments of Spanish infantry, chiefly performing escort duties.
