[Old French More (mod. Maure) from Latin Maurus (medieval Latin Morus) from Greek Mauros.]
Orig. (now Hist.), a native or inhabitant of Mauretania, a region of N. Africa corresponding to parts of present-day Morocco and Algeria. Later, a member of a Muslim people of mixed Berber and Arab descent inhabiting NW Africa, esp. present-day Mauritania, who in the 8th cent. conquered Spain. Formerly also gen., a black person (cf. BLACKAMOOR). LME.
A Muslim; spec. an Indian or Sri Lankan Muslim. Now arch. rare. L16.
Comb.: Moor macaque a brownish-black macaque, Macaca maurus, of Sulawesi; Moorman noun2 (now arch. rare) = sense 2 above; Moor's-head (a) a horse's head of a darker colour than its body; (b) (a heraldic representation of) the head of a Moor; (c) a type of vessel lid used in distilling.
