af- prefix (rarely productive).
Assim. form of Latin ad- before f. In Old French, Latin aff- was reduced to af-, which appears in early adoptions, but in later French, and hence in English, aff- was restored by Latinization, as affair, affront. Hence extended to some words of different origin, as affray, affright.
