atheling noun. obsolete exc. Hist. Also aetheling.
An Anglo-Saxon prince or lord, esp. (Hist.) the heir to the throne. Often (Atheling) used as the epithet of Edgar (d. c 1125), grandson of Edmund Ironside and putative heir of Harold II.
