buoy noun. ME.
[Prob. from Middle Dutch bo(e)ye, boeie (Dutch boei) from Germanic base meaning 'signal', whence also French bouee, Spanish boya.]
A floating object fastened in a particular place to point out the position of shoals, rocks, anchors, etc. under the water, or the course for ships etc., or to float a cable in a rocky anchorage. ME.
