A. noun.
A wooden vessel of cylindrical form, usu. bulging in the middle, made of curved staves bound together by hoops, with flat ends, used esp. for alcoholic drinks; a similar vessel of metal, plastic, etc.; a barrel. E16.
b. Such a vessel and its contents; the capacity of such a vessel as a measure for wine, spirits, etc. E18.
