[Latin committere join, practise, entrust, (in medieval Latin) consign to custody, formed as COM- + mittere put, send (see MISSION noun, verb).]
I. verb trans.
Entrust or consign for treatment or safe keeping (to a person, a person's care, etc., to the earth, the flames, etc.). LME.
commit to memory learn so as to be able to recall. commit to paper: see PAPER noun & adjective. commit to writing record in writing.
Consign officially to custody as a (suspected) criminal or as insane; send to prison etc., esp. until trial. (Foll. by to.) LME.
