A voyage in which a ship sails to and fro over a particular region, esp. for the protection of shipping or for pleasure; a sail for pleasure making for no particular place or calling at a series of places. E18.
transf. A similar journey by land or air; a journey, or part of a journey, at cruising speed. M18.
Forestry. A survey or estimate of the amount of timber in a particular area. Chiefly US. E20.
In full cruise missile. A low-flying missile carrying a warhead, which is guided continuously to its target by computer. M20.
Comb.: cruise control (a device providing) the facility for maintaining a motor vehicle at a predetermined constant speed without use of the accelerator pedal; cruise liner a liner designed for holiday cruises; cruise missile: see sense 4 above; cruise ship = cruise liner above; cruiseway an inland waterway intended chiefly for pleasure cruising; cruisewear clothes suitable for wearing on a holiday cruise.
