[French coutelas from Proto-Romance, from Latin cultellus (see CUTLER) + augm. suffix -aceum: cf. CURTAL-AXE.]
A short sword with a flat slightly curved blade, esp. that with which sailors were formerly armed; a machete.
Comb.: cutlass-fish any of various long slender marine fishes of the family Trichiuridae, with long jaws and sharp teeth; esp. Trichiurus lepturus, a silvery-coloured fish of the Atlantic, caught for food in the tropics.
