daze verb. ME.
[Orig. in pa. pple from Old Norse dasaer weary or exhausted from cold or exertion. Cf. Old Norse dasask (verb refl.) become exhausted, dasi lazy fellow, Swedish dasa lie idle.]
I. verb trans.
1. Stupefy, bewilder (a person), as by a blow on the head, drink, etc.; stun, confuse. Freq. as dazed ppl adjective. ME.
G. Macdonald She looked dazed, perhaps from the effects of her fall. D. Murphy I was so dazed with joy that I could hardly speak.
2. Benumb, blight, or destroy with cold. Scot. & north. ME.
3. Confound or bewilder (the vision) by excessive light or brilliance; dazzle (lit. & fig.). Chiefly poet. E16.

II. verb intrans.
4. Be or become stupefied or bewildered; be benumbed with cold; remain inactive or torpid. ME-E16.
5. Be or become dazzled; gaze stupidly. LME-M17.
6. Of meat, bread, etc.: become spoiled by being cooked at the wrong temperature. Of wood etc.: become rotten or spoiled from dampness etc. Chiefly as dazed ppl adjective. Scot. & north. L17.
