A course of fruit, nuts, sweets, etc., served at the end of a meal. Also, (orig. US) a pudding or sweet course.
Attrib. & comb.: In the sense 'for the serving or eating of dessert', as dessert fork, dessert knife, dessert plate, dessert service, etc.; in the sense 'suitable for serving for dessert', as dessert apple, dessert pear, etc. Special combs., as dessertspoon (a) a spoon intermediate in size between a tablespoon and a teaspoon; (b) a dessertspoonful; dessertspoonful the amount a dessertspoon will hold (a recognized measure for medicine, culinary ingredients, etc.); dessert wine a wine suitable for drinking with dessert, esp. a still, sweet, sometimes fortified, wine.
