The action of dissociating; the condition of being dissociated; disassociation. E17.
spec. in Science. The usu. reversible breaking up of a compound into simpler substances, esp. by the action of heat on a gas or a solvent on a solute; the analogous breaking up of a molecule; the ionization of an atom. M19.
Psychology. The process or result of breaking up an association of ideas. L19.
Psychiatry. A process, or the resulting condition, in which certain concepts or mental processes are separated from the conscious personality; spec. the state of a person suffering from dissociated personality. L19.
Comb.: dissociation constant the product of the concentrations of dissolved ions in a solution, at equilibrium, divided by the concentration of the undissociated molecule.
