[Old & mod. French galle from Latin galla oak-apple, gall.]
An excrescence produced on a tree (esp. the oak) or other plant by the action of a fungus, bacterium, an insect, etc.
Comb.: gall-apple = GALL noun3; gallberry US either of two hollies, Ilex glabra and I. coriacea (the large or sweet gallberry); gall-fly any of various insects which cause galls by laying their eggs in plant tissues; spec. any fly of the dipteran family Tephritidae; gall-gnat, gall-midge any gall-forming insect of the dipteran family Cecidomyidae; gall-nut = GALL noun3; gall-wasp any gall-forming insect of the hymenopteran superfamily Cynipoidea.
