Any of a large group of usu. red, yellow, or green silicate minerals which occur widely as components of rocks, crystallize in the cubic system, and have the general formula A3B2(SiO4)3, where A and B are respectively di- and trivalent metals; esp. a deep-red glassy form of this occurring as large crystals; a gem consisting of this.
