Anatomy & Zoology. Any cell or organ which synthesizes and secretes some particular chemical substance or substances for use by the body or for excretion. Also (now loosely), an organ resembling a gland; esp. a lymph node. Cf. ENDOCRINE, EXOCRINE. L17.
mammary gland, monkey gland, scent gland, thyroid gland, Tyson's gland, etc.
Botany. Any of various (groups of) cells on or within a plant structure which secrete some particular substance or substances (e.g. oils, nectar, etc.). Also, any small protuberance like a gland. L18.
? The glands were orig. characterized as extracting substances from the blood, a wider definition which included the lymph nodes. Cf. GLANDULE.
