One of the hexose sugars, obtainable in dextro- and laevorotatory forms and as a racemic mixture; spec. the dextrorotatory form (also called D-glucose, dextrose, grape sugar), a white or colourless sweet-tasting solid which is an important energy source in living organisms and which occurs free in fruit juices and the blood and combined in glucosides, some oligosaccharides (e.g. sucrose), and some polysaccharides (e.g. cellulose and starch). A syrup containing D-glucose, maltose, dextrin, and water, obtained by the incomplete hydrolysis of starch and used in the food industry as a sweetener and thickener. Also glucose syrup. M19.
