The phenomenon whereby changes in some property of a physical system lag behind changes in the phenomenon causing it, esp. the lag of magnetization behind magnetizing force when the latter is varying; any dependence of the value of a property on the past history of the system.
Comb.: hysteresis curve, hysteresis loop: showing how a property varies when the phenomenon causing it varies from one value to another and back again; hysteresis loss the energy dissipated as heat in a system as a result of hysteresis.
