Orig., a short descriptive or dedicatory passage placed at the beginning of a book; a title, a heading. Later, an informal dedication of a book etc. LME.
Civil & Scots Law. An accusation or challenge made with the condition that proof of its falsity would render the accuser liable to penalty for calumny. L15-E18.
A letter, word, sentence, etc., that is inscribed on stone, metal, paper, etc., esp. so as to be conspicuous or durable. M16.
W. Trevor An inscription on a brass plaque that read: To Charles Edward Burrows. M. Cox Monty composed a memorial inscription.
Anatomy. A marking on some organ produced by contact with another, esp. where a tendon crosses a muscle. L16.
