The action or a means of ensuring or making certain; assurance, guarantee. Now chiefly as passing into sense 2. LME.

The act or process of insuring property, life, etc.; a contract by which one party undertakes on receipt of a premium to secure another against financial loss by a payment in the event of loss, damage, injury, etc. Cf. ASSURANCE 6. M17.
