A volatile, flammable, colourless liquid, CH2C(CH3)CHCH2, obtainable from petroleum and forming the structural unit of natural and synthetic rubbers; 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene.
Comb.: isoprene rule: that the carbon skeleton of a terpene is made up of linked isoprene units; isoprene unit the arrangement of five carbon atoms found in (polymers of) the isoprene molecule (the single or double nature of the bonds being disregarded).
