[Japanese, from kara empty + oke abbreviation of okesutora orchestra.]
A form of entertainment (originating in Japan) in which one or more people sing popular songs as soloists against pre-recorded backing music; (in full karaoke music) such pre-recorded backing music.
Comb.: karaoke bar, karaoke club: providing karaoke facilities for customers (esp. in Japan); karaoke machine: for reproducing the music and at the same time giving a display of the words; karaoke music: see above.
