A varnish consisting of shellac dissolved in alcohol with some (gold) colouring matter, used chiefly as a coating for brass. L17.
Any of various resinous wood varnishes capable of taking a hard polish, esp. (more fully Japan lacquer, Japanese lacquer) that obtained from the lacquer-tree, Rhus verniciflua (see below). L17.
b. Decorative ware made of wood coated with this, often inlaid with ivory, mother-of-pearl, etc. L19.
