A member of a legion; esp. (usu. Legionnaire) a member of a named legion, as the American Legion, the Royal British Legion, or the French Foreign Legion.
legionnaires' disease [from an outbreak at a convention of the American Legion in Philadelphia in 1976] a severe form of bacterial pneumonia (often accompanied by mental confusion) caused by Legionella pneumophila and associated esp. with infected water systems in buildings.
