[Old French licur, licour (mod. LIQUEUR) from Latin liquor rel. to liquare liquefy, filter, liqui flow, liquere be fluid.]
1. A liquid; matter in a liquid state; a fluid. obsolete exc. as below. ME.

2. Liquid for drinking; beverage, drink. Now usu. (a kind of) alcoholic drink, esp. produced by distillation. ME.

3. The water in which meat has been boiled; broth, sauce; the fat in which bacon, fish, etc., has been fried; the liquid contained in oysters. LME.
