[Alt., by assoc. with LOVE noun and ACHE noun2 (= parsley), of Old French levesche, luvesche (mod. liveche) from late Latin levisticum (sc. apium parsley), for earlier ligusticum neut. of ligusticus Ligurian.]
An umbelliferous plant, Levisticum officinale, native to southern Europe, used as a culinary and medicinal herb. Also (more fully Scots lovage, Scotch lovage), a white-flowered umbellifer, Ligusticum scoticum, which grows on European rocky coasts.
