mitre noun2. Also *miter. L17.
[Perh. transf. use of MITRE noun1.]
a. In full mitre-joint. A right-angled joint of wood or some other material, in which the angle made by the joined pieces is bisected by the line of junction. L17.
b. Either of the shaped ends or edges which form such a joint; a 45 angle such as these ends or edges have. E18.
In full mitre-square. A bevel with the blade set at 45, or with two blades set at 45 to one another, for bevelling mitre-joints. L17.
In full mitre-wheel. Either of a pair of bevelled cog-wheels with teeth set at 45 and right-angled axes. M19.
Comb.: mitre-bevel = sense 2 above; mitre-block, mitre board, mitre box a block or frame of wood with slits for guiding a saw when cutting mitre-joints; mitre-cramp: for securing a glued mitre-joint while it is drying; mitre gear either of a pair of bevel gears of equal length with right-angled shafts; mitre-joint: see sense 1 above; mitre-plane: with an oblique surface for making mitre-joints; mitre shooting-board: used in chamfering the edges of wood; mitre-square: see sense 2 above; mitre-wheel: see sense 3 above.
