Logic. Any of the classes into which each of the four figures of valid categorical syllogism is subdivided according to the quality (affirmative or negative) and quantity (universal or particular) of the constituent propositions. Also, the type of structure to which a syllogism belongs in respect of quality and quantity alone. Cf. MODE noun 3a. M16.
Grammar. Any of the groups of forms of a verb which indicate whether the action of the verb is represented as fact or in some other manner, as a possibility, command, wish, etc.; the quality of a verb as represented or distinguished by a particular mood. Cf. ASPECT noun 9, TENSE noun 2. M16.
imperative mood, optative mood, predicative mood, subjunctive mood, etc.
Music.
a. In medieval music, the duration or time-value of a note in relation to another in the rhythm of a piece. Cf. MODE noun 1b. L16-L18.
