Medicine. Infestation with filarioid worms of the genus Onchocerca; spec. disease caused by O. volvulus and transmitted by biting flies of the genus Simulium, which occurs in tropical Africa and America and is marked by characteristic lesions of subcutaneous tissue and the eyes, often causing blindness (also called river blindness).
