Anatomy & Zoology. In humans, the cavity (with its enclosing muscles and mucous membrane) situated behind the nose, mouth, and larynx and connecting them with the oesophagus; in vertebrates in general, the part of the alimentary canal between the mouth cavity and the oesophagus; in invertebrates, the part of the alimentary canal immediately posterior to the buccal cavity.
