pitch noun1.

A black or dark brown tenacious resinous substance, hard when cold, semi-liquid when hot, obtained as a residue from the distillation of wood tar or turpentine and used for caulking the seams of ships, to protect wood from moisture, etc. OE.
Any of various similar dark viscous substances of mineral origin; asphalt, bitumen. LME.

a. The resin or crude turpentine which exudes from pine and fir trees. LME.
