(a) a piston; (b) a knob, button, etc., used to operate signalling mechanisms and points on a railway system; (c) a device used in plumbing consisting of a rubber cup on a handle for clearing blocked pipes by a plunging and sucking action; (d) Jazz slang (more fully plunger mute) a plunging device resembling the type employed in plumbing, used as a mute for a trumpet or trombone.
