a. The projection of the upper part of a ship's hull at stem and stern beyond the keel. Also, the slope of the stern or rudder. E17.
b. The inclination of a mast or funnel, usu. towards the stern, from the perpendicular along the line of the keel. E19.
transf. The inclination of any object from the perpendicular or to the horizontal; the slope of a thing, as (a) the slope of the stage or the auditorium in a theatre; (b) the slope of a seat-back; (c) the angle of an edge or face of a cutting tool. E17.
