A. verb trans. Apply a thin opaque coat of paint to (a section of a painting) in order to produce a softer or duller effect; apply (paint) thinly to produce such an effect. Also, modify (a drawing) similarly with light shading in pencil, charcoal, etc. L17.
b. noun. A thin opaque coat of paint or layer of shading applied to produce a softened effect; a softened effect produced by scumbling. M19.
