[Urdu saiyidi, sidi from Persian saiyidi from colloq. Arab. sidi for literary Arab. sayyidi my lord, formed as SAYYID.]
Orig., (a title of respect given in the west of the Indian subcontinent to) an African Muslim holding a high position under any of the kings of the Deccan. Later, a black African (latterly chiefly in sidi-boy).
