Any of various rays of the family Rajidae, with a roughly diamond-shaped body and a long thin tail; spec. (a) the large Raja batis, which is common in the NE Atlantic and much used as food; (b) colloq. = THORNBACK 1. Also, the flesh of any of these fishes as food. Cf. THORNBACK 1, 1b.
