A person who splits; spec. (a) a person employed in splitting fish; (b) Austral. a person whose occupation is cutting timber to make posts, rails, etc. E17.
b. A person (esp. a taxonomist) who attaches importance to differences rather than similarities in classification or analysis and so favours subdivision. Cf. LUMPER noun 3. L19.
A machine, instrument, etc., which splits something; spec. (a) an auxiliary set of gears that provides a set of ratios between those of the main gearbox; (b) a device for sending a received electric current or signal along two or more routes. M19.
