A. noun.
That which is written underneath; a passage, note, etc. at the bottom or end of a document etc.; a signature. E18.
a. A character, number, or symbol written or printed below (and usu. to the right of) a letter, number, etc., or below the line. E20.
b. Computing. A symbol (notionally written as a subscript but in practice usually not) used in a program, alone or with others, to specify one of the elements of an array. M20.
