Orig., a drink made of milk mixed with Wine, cider, rum, etc. and often sweetened, spiced, and served warm. Later, a cold dessert made of milk or cream (usu. mixed with white Wine), flavoured, sweetened, and whipped to a thick but light consistency. M16.
