A. noun.
The weight of a wrapping, container, or receptacle in which goods are packed, which is deducted from the gross weight in order to ascertain the net weight; a deduction made from the gross weight to allow for this or (formerly) for any waste. Also (esp. as tare weight), the weight of a motor vehicle, aircraft, etc., without its fuel or load. LME.
tare and tret the two deductions used in calculating the net weight of goods (cf. TRET); the arithmetical rule for calculating these.
