Medicine. Any of a group of hereditary haemolytic blood diseases widespread in Mediterranean, African, and Asian countries, caused by the faulty synthesis of part of the haemoglobin molecule and leading to anaemia and other symptoms. Usu. with specifying word or prefixed Greek letter(s).
thalassaemia major the homozygous form of thalassaemia, which results in the severest symptoms; also called Cooley's anaemia.
