[medieval Latin from late Latin trachia from Greek trakheia (fem. of trakhus rough), short for arteria trakheia rough artery, (in medieval Latin arteria trachea).]
Anatomy & Zoology. A large membranous tube extending from the larynx to the bronchi, which is strengthened by cartilaginous (or bony) rings and conveys air to and from the lungs; the windpipe. LME.
Botany. A tracheary element. Now Hist. M18.
Zoology. A fine chitinous tube leading from a spiracle (or gill) in an insect or Other arthropod, which is freq. spirally ringed and conveys air direct to the tissues. Usu. in pl. E19.
