[Italian travertino, older tivertino, from Latin tiburtinus TIBURTINE.]
A white or light-coloured concretionary limestone, usually hard and semi-crystalline, precipitated in hot springs, caves, etc., from water holding calcium carbonate in solution, and sometimes used for building (also travertine stone). Also, a porous, sponge-textured stone formed in the same way (also called calc-sinter, tufa).
