Botany. A hair, scale, prickle, or other outgrowth from the epidermis of a plant. Also, in certain bacteria, esp. cyanobacteria, a filament formed of closely linked cells. L19.
Entomology. An epidermal hair; esp. in myrmecophilous insects, a tuft of hairs near a gland producing a secretion attractive to ants. E20.
