A heavy radioactive metallic chemical element of the actinide series, atomic no. 92, which occurs in pitchblende and other ores, and is important as fissile material in nuclear reactors and weapons. (Symbol U.)
Comb.: uranium bomb an atomic bomb in which uranium is the fissile material; uranium lead the isotope lead-206; uranium-lead adjective designating a method of isotopic dating and the results obtained with it, based on measurement of the relative amounts in rock of uranium-238 and -235 and of their ultimate decay products lead-206 and -207; uranium series the series of isotopes produced by the radioactive decay of uranium-238, each member resulting from the decay of the previous one.
