Chemistry. veratric acid, a cyclic carboxylic acid, (CH3O)2C6H3COOH, which is present in veratrums.
veratria noun (now rare) = veratrine E19.
veratridine noun a toxic yellowish-white amorphous alkaloid, C36H51NO11, which is present in the seeds of veratrums and sabadilla and has anti-hypertensive properties, but is now used chiefly for experimental purposes E20.
'veratrine, 'veratrin noun a toxic mixture of alkaloids present in the seeds of veratrums and sabadilla, formerly used to relieve neuralgia and rheumatism E19.
'veratrole, 'veratrol noun a colourless aromatic oil or solid, C6H4(OCH3)2, produced from catechol and used as an antiseptic M19.
