The exclusive right to use or sell an invention. The government, under the auspices of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, grants such rights only to new, useful and non-obvious ideas for machines, processes or certain designs. Drafting patent applications is an art that some say takes years to develop well. Depending on how the application is drafted a patent can offer very weak and narrow protection, or rather robust and strong protection.
