The first letter of the modern English alphabet and of the ancient Roman one, corresp. to Greek alpha, Hebrew aleph. The sound orig. represented by the letter, in English as in Latin, was a low back vowel, articulated with the tongue as low as possible in the mouth, considerable separation of the jaws, and spreading of the lips. The letter and its sound.
A per se A by itself, esp. as a word; fig. the first, best, or unique person or thing. A to Z a comprehensive manual. from A to Z over the entire range, completely.
The shape of the letter.
A-frame (a house or Other structure supported by) a frame shaped like a capital A. A-line (a garment) having a narrow waist or shoulders and a somewhat flared skirt. A-shaped adjective having a shape or a cross-section like the capital letter A. A tent a tent with sides sloping down to the ground from a ridge pole.
II. Symbolical uses.
Used to denote serial order; applied e.g. to the first group or section, sheet of a book, etc.
Music. (Cap. A.) The sixth note of the diatonic scale of C major, or the first of the relative minor scale of C. Also, the scale of a composition with A as its keynote.
Logic. (Cap. A.) A universal affirmative proposition.

A No. 1 US colloq. excellent, first-rate. A 1 in Lloyd's Register of Shipping, used of ships in first-class condition as to hull (A) and stores (1); colloq. excellent, first-rate. A-side (the Music of) the more important side of a gramophone record. A Special Hist. a member of a full-time special police force in Northern Ireland.
(Cap. A.) The blood group characterized by the presence of the agglutinogen designated A and the absence of that designated B.
AB the blood group characterized by the presence of both A and B agglutinogens. ABO adjective designating or pertaining to the system in which blood is divided into four types (A, AB, B, and O) on the basis of the presence or absence of certain inherited antigens.
(Cap. A.) Designating a series of international standard paper sizes with a fixed shape and twice the area of the next size, as A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, etc.
